Used medicinally, Liquorice root imparts a protective, viscous layer to the wall of the stomach and reduces gastric acid secretions. This makes it useful in treating gastric ulcer and inflammation, peptic ulcer and ulcers in the mouth. It has a similar protective and anti-inflammatory action in the respiratory system and is of benefit in respiratory conditions such as dry cough, hoarseness, bronchitis and excess catarrh. It's other main action is on the endocrine system, helping to normalise production of adrenal hormones.
Excess use is not recommended for those suffering from high blood pressure
