Chamomile is a useful anti-spasmodic, relaxant and anti-inflammatory, making it invaluable in cases of tension, whether this manifests as sleeplessness, irritability, anxiety, nervous dyspepsia, flatulence, or constipation. An infusion of the flowers of chamomile can be used for bathing sore, inflamed and tired eyes; gargled for a sore throat and applied externally to speed wound healing. Painful periods and menopausal tension will also be eased by a strong, hot infusion of chamomile, sipped slowly. This is a wonderful remedy for babies and children, too -a weak infusion can be given before bed, to ensure a restful sleep for the whole family.
